A UK survey of over 1000 office workers recently found that when asked ‘How much do you like your boss?’ 23% said ‘Not at all’ and 29% said ‘Not very much.’

Participants were asked how much they liked their boss, with the options being not at all, not very much, indifferent, like a little and like a lot.
Of particular interest was the analysis when the gender of bosses was taken into account, clearly men are less liked by their teams than female managers:
Male Bosses | Female Bosses | |
Dislike | 60% | 41% |
Indifferent | 9% | 9% |
Like | 31% | 50% |
So if you lead a team and you fear that you might be in the ‘disliked’ category, what can you do about it? Those surveyed were asked what it was specifically, that they disliked in their manager:
- 1. Poor communication
- 2. Lack of recognition
- 3. Bullying
- 4. Insufficient pay
- 5. Overly critical
- 6. They are incompetent
- 7. Dishonesty
- 8. Favouritism
- 9. They shout
- 10. Unrealistic expectations
Whereas those that liked their boss cited:
- 1. Clear and regular communication
- 2. Fair expectation
- 3. Good at their job
- 4. Approachable
- 5. Encourage progression
- 6. Recognise good work
